What are some beneficial effects of fasting? After about 12 hours of fasting all the way up to 36 hours, you actually have an increase in the breakdown of triglycerides or fat. In addition, you have increased parasympathetic activity. What does that mean? Your heart rate starts to slow down a little bit, and your blood pressure goes down. This begins right after 12 hours of fasting going on. Also, inflammatory markers like TNF alpha, IL-6 or Interleukin-6, IL-1B start to go down. Anti-inflammatory adiponectin starts to go up. And other studies in mice have shown that obesity goes down; Insulin resistance goes down; fatty liver goes down; inflammation all across the body goes down.
